Windsurfing started with a guy name Newman Derby in 1964. He patented his first free sail system, and he got it into popular mechanics magazine. However, in the early to mid sixties windsurf crazed engineer by the name of Hoyle Schweitzer and a surfer and aeronautical engineer by the name of Jim Drake started experimenting by putting a free sail system on a surfboard. They claimed to have the right to the invention of windsurfing.

In the terms of the history there are a number of organizations, U.S. Sailing being the most prominent and the second most prominent is the United States Windsurfing Association and a few associations that have had training: Windsurfing Instructors of America, Mistral, U.S. Sailing and Bic, just to name a few.
